Saturdays are my favorite day of the week. I know that we all have our favorite days for a variety of reasons. Maybe you like Fridays because it’s the end of the work week and you get to unwind and relax with friends in the evening. Maybe you like Sunday because it’s a day of worship and a day to spend with your family. Regardless of the day, we all have a day that means something special to them. Saturdays are special to me, and I wait all week for it to come.
Why is Saturday so special to me? Today is dance day for my kids. I know it doesn’t sound like an event that would make me so excited, but there is so much meaning behind it. As a child, my favorite thing to do was dance. I danced everywhere!! If I wasn’t at my dance studio, I was dancing in my room, at the club, on kickline, in theater class at high school, etc. I was constantly dancing. It was my greatest passion.
Dance gave me an outlet to express myself. It allowed me to be able to express my feelings in a way that was most productive for me. To this day, I still enjoy dancing for those reasons. I find myself throwing on music in my house and dancing around on days that I feel stress and anxiety takes over. It truly helps to calm me and make me feel whole.
Dance was the place that I spent most of my time growing up and it’s the place that I established my closest friendships. I have fond memories of the girls that I danced with and still smile when I think about them till this day. We all shared a common bond and passion. The one bond that still grows strong till this day is the bond I had with my dance teacher, Kristin.
Kristin isn’t that much older than me, but I admired her and looked up to her so much. I still do. Before she became my teacher, I used to watch her dance and be amazed at how great she was, and I aspired to be just like her. She was (is) everything a great teacher should be. She possessed talent, drive, but above all, she loved her students more than anything. As a child, I wanted to be just like her. I tried to dress like her and listen to the same music as her. I looked up to her like she was a big sister. I always wanted to make her proud.
At the time she was teaching me, Kristin was a young adult. She must have wanted to do the things that all the other 20 year olds would do instead of spending so much time with me as a little teenager. I am sure she still got to do those things, but she also sacrificed so much of her time to teach me and to make me better. She used to spend her Sundays taking me into NYC to take dance classes so that I could grow as a dancer. She took her time to be with me and I am forever grateful for all the love and sacrifice she has given me.
My oldest daughter, Olivia, is just like me. She was dancing in my womb when certain songs/artists would come on the radio. I could still feel her kicking to the beats in my tummy. I knew that she was going to be a dancer. Sure enough, she was bouncing and dancing before she could even walk. I knew that I had to sign her up for dance and I wanted to give her the same experience I had.
My daughter started with Kristin when she was only 2 and now my youngest goes to her has well. I am so grateful that Kristin followed her passion and opened her own dance school years ago. She has given my kids a love and a passion for dance. Like me, they wait for Saturdays because dance is their favorite thing to do and seeing her brings them so much joy. Kristin’s love for her students is special. Each student that goes there is truly loved by her, whether they know it or not. This is what makes her a special teacher and person. She puts everything into what she does. She still sacrifices for her students till this day. My children will always dance with her, no matter where so goes. She gives them so much more than just dance and we could never get that kind of love from just any dance school.
So, now you know why I am up at 6:00 on a Saturday morning. I am excited to watch my children dance and prepare for their first dance competition, but I am even more excited to see my friend that I have shared so many incredible memories with. Kristin’s love and support that she has given me through all these years will always be cherished. I just hope she knows the impact that she has on all her students. They may not all express it but it is there. I know as an educator myself, tt just takes 1 student to make it all worth it. She has 3 in this household, and so many more.
