Today my kids asked me what Mardi Gras was since they were hearing about it on television. So many emotions and memories filled my head. I absolutely love New Orleans. I love the culture and the food!! I love it so much that I based the theme of my wedding around that amazing city. Thinking of that city brings back so many fond memories. I immediately pictured myself walking around Jackson Square with a street filled with artists, tarot card readers, street performers, etc. It’s simply beautiful. I could smell the beignets and coffee in the air from Cafe du Monde. It is completely different from walking around New York City.
After snapping back to reality, I continued to explain what Mardi Gras was all about. I told my children about the elaborate floats that are made for the parade and how beads are thrown at the crowd. This is for the celebration for the coming fast that happens the next day for the start of Lent. I also told them about the traditional food that they eat, such as jambalaya, gumbo, and of course king cake. After explaining the things that occur during this time, I proceeded to show them YouTube videos and pictures from my many trips to this amazing place.
All that talk about Mardi Grad got me wishing that I could go back. I know that isn’t exactly possible right now so I decided to bring the food and the culture of New Orleans to my home. I went online and searched for recipes that I could make that would allow my children to experience this fun and unique celebration from home. Immediately I thought of Mother’s. Mothers is one of my favorite places in New Orleans to have Jambalaya. I was so excited that their website provided me with the famous recipes from their restaurant. My kids really enjoyed celebrating this holiday. Now we are ready to begin Lent and prepare for Easter. I am so happy that I brought this amazing celebration into my home so that my children could learn a new culture and get the chance to experience new things.
